When the monsoon rains stop in June, the plains dry out, and the wildebeest move westward towards Lake Victoria in search of pasture and rains. The local climate of Lake Victoria, the second largest fresh water lake in the world, produces its own rainfall near the lakeshore during these months. The Grumeti River is an important component of the ecosystem in that, in addition to providing water to support terrestrial and avian wildlife, it also forms a well-known natural hazard in the path of the annual wildebeest migration on the western side of the park. The Grumeti is home to the largest Nile crocodile population in the ecosystem. Measuring sixteen feet long and weighing over a ton, many people consider the crocodile the last surviving beast of the dinosaur age. Ruminants like wildebeest and zebra have to drink water on a daily basis; the Grumeti crocodiles feast on them when they come to the river to do that. On the western side of the park, just Musabi and Masira grass plains await the migration and extend as feeding grounds to the Grumeti Reserve’s Sabora plains. All in all, they provide enough forage for the herds that make it across the river during these months.
